Short answer: Bali charges a 150,000 IDR (approximately $10 USD) tourist levy per person, per visit. It applies to all foreign tourists arriving in Bali. You can pay it online before you fly — which takes about two minutes — or at kiosks on arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport. It's separate from your Indonesian visa and has been in place since February 2024.

What Is the Bali Tourist Tax?

The levy is officially called the Love Bali Contribution or Pungutan Wisatawan Asing (foreign tourist levy). It was introduced by the Bali provincial government in February 2024 to fund cultural preservation, environmental protection and tourism infrastructure across the island.

The amount — 150,000 IDR per person — works out to roughly $10 USD, €9 EUR or £8 GBP at current exchange rates. It is a one-off charge per visit, not per day, so if you're staying two weeks you pay it once.

The revenue is designated for: Balinese cultural preservation, environmental conservation projects (including beach and reef cleanup), rural tourism infrastructure and disaster relief preparedness.

⚠️ This is NOT your visa fee. The tourist levy is completely separate from Indonesia's visa-on-arrival fee (USD 35) or the visa-free entry that applies to citizens of many countries. You may need to pay both.

How to Pay the Bali Tourist Tax — Step by Step

There are two ways to pay: online before arrival (recommended) or at the airport on arrival. Both are official — neither is harder than the other, but paying online avoids a queue.

Option 1: Pay Online Before You Fly (Recommended)

1
Go to the official portal: Visit lovebali.baliprov.go.id — this is the only official payment portal run by the Bali Provincial Government. Avoid third-party sites charging higher amounts or processing fees.
2
Register your details: Enter your passport number, nationality, date of birth and planned arrival date. One registration per person — travelling as a couple or family means registering each person separately.
3
Pay by card: The portal accepts Visa, Mastercard and major international debit/credit cards. The exact amount is 150,000 IDR — your card will convert this at your bank's rate.
4
Save your QR code: After payment you receive a QR code by email. Screenshot it or download it — you'll need to show it at the immigration counter or a dedicated scan point on arrival.
5
Show on arrival: At Ngurah Rai Airport, present your QR code at the Love Bali contribution checkpoint before or at immigration. Scanning takes seconds.

💡 Pay a few days before you fly — not at the airport on the same day. The portal has occasionally had slow load times during peak arrival periods, and paying online from home is quicker. You can pay up to 3 months in advance.

Option 2: Pay on Arrival at the Airport

If you haven't paid online, you can pay at dedicated kiosks inside Ngurah Rai Airport on arrival. These accept cash (IDR, USD, AUD, EUR, GBP and some other currencies) and most major credit/debit cards.

The process: join the queue at the Love Bali contribution counter (clearly signposted in the arrivals area, before or near immigration), pay, receive your receipt, then proceed to immigration. Allow 5–15 extra minutes for this, longer during busy arrival periods.

What If You Don't Pay?

The levy is enforceable. Tourists who haven't paid either online or at the airport kiosks may be stopped at immigration and directed to pay before being allowed to enter. There have been reports of longer delays for those without proof of payment during busy arrival periods.

There is no significant fine for not paying online (you simply pay on arrival instead), but failing to pay at all when entering Bali is an immigration violation. Don't risk it for $10.

Is the Bali Tourist Tax New in 2026?

The levy itself launched in February 2024, so it's been in place for about two years by mid-2026. What changes year-to-year is enforcement tightening and whether the amount increases. The 150,000 IDR rate has remained constant since launch, but the Bali government has periodically discussed raising it — always worth checking before you travel for the most current figure.

💡 Flag for fact-check: The amount (150,000 IDR) and the official portal URL (lovebali.baliprov.go.id) are correct as of October 2026 — but levy amounts and official portals can change. Verify these details on the official Bali provincial government website or the Indonesian Embassy website for your country before you travel.

Does This Replace the Indonesian Visa?

No — the tourist levy and the visa are completely separate things. Here's a quick overview of what you may need:

Entry RequirementAmountWho PaysWhere
Tourist Levy (Love Bali)150,000 IDR (~$10)All foreign touristsOnline or at airport
Visa on Arrival (VoA)500,000 IDR (~$35)Nationalities not on visa-free listAirport counter on arrival
Visa-Free EntryFree~90 qualifying nationalitiesImmigration on arrival

Citizens of the UK, USA, Australia, most EU countries and many others qualify for visa-free entry for up to 30 days — but still pay the tourist levy. Citizens of countries not on the visa-free list pay both the levy AND the visa on arrival.

Other Travel Costs to Budget for Bali

The tourist levy is one of the smaller costs of a Bali trip. Here's what else catches visitors off-guard:

🌴 Bali Tourist Tax — The Short Version

It's $10 per person, once per visit. Pay online at lovebali.baliprov.go.id a few days before you fly — it takes two minutes and you get a QR code to show on arrival. If you forget, pay at the airport kiosk. It's separate from your visa. Don't overthink it — just pay it and move on to planning the parts of Bali that actually take some thought.
